It’s seems to be a strange time to be talking about reindeer hides with Christmas coming so I thought it might be useful to give our readers at City Cows a bit of background  to these wonderful animal skins. Cowhide is the natural, unbleached skin which includes hair of a bovine animal (cow). It keeps the original cow skin colours. Cow hides are a natural by-product of the food processing industry and cow hide can also be manufactured into leather, which can then be made into shoes, wallets and leather clothing and other products.

When a cow is slaughtered, the skin is taken off and then initially salted to preserve it before being sorted into differing size and colours. In the leather tannery, often a traditional hair on hide tanning method is used to make sure the hide remains soft and supple and more resistant to odour and moulting and thus the cow hide can last for a very long time in normal use.

On completion of the tanning process the cowhide is naturally dried and the hides are then graded for quality and imperfections.The best quality hides are usually presented in their natural colours, which are based on the different types of cattle. Cow hide can be coloured with dyes to resemble other animal skins such as tiger or zebra.

So you’ve just bought your cow hide or other animal skin rug – how do you take the best possible care of your rug and ensure it lasts in pristine condition for many years ?

Cleaning of a cow hide or other animal skin rug is easy if you follow these simple easy to follow steps requiring tools and items close at hand in your own home. By so doing you can make certain that you keep your rug looking like new for many years to come.

What You Will Need

• Vac with a brush attachment
• A Hard-bristled brush
• Some mild cleansing soap (Lux works very well)
• A sponge
• Scotch Guard or a similar fabric protector
• We also recommend a steam cleaner if you have one as this can clean deep within the fur pile.

Step One

Make sure – of course -  you vacuum your rug regularly as this will remove obvious dirt and prevent grit grinding into the hide causing damage and dirt to further accumulate.

Use your vacuum’s floor attachment to clean the fur in direction of the hair, and gently draw out dust and grime contaminants. Do that every week to ensure that sharp contaminants don’t start to cut the fur from the hide.

Step Two

Try not to soak the rug, however, you can gently steam clean it with no negative after effects. Fur hides shed moisture well as their purpose is and keep the animal dry. If during cleansing the hide gets too wet, then let it dry a little preferably in the sun before continuing the clean.

Step Three

Remove spots with a non-alkaline cleaning soap. Leather soaps work with stains on smooth hairless animal skins but baby shampoo or mild dish detergent gently scrubbed into foam is preferable for hides with hair.  Apply the froth to a sponge and gently wipe the hide in direction of the grain. Rinse with a moist sponge to get rid of any remaining shampoo.

Step Four

Apply Scotch Guard before your rug becomes stained or after you have just cleaned it as this can help the fur to repel further stains and keep your valuable cow hide rug in a pristine condition for many years.
